Monthly Themes & Activities

Every month, the children explore a different theme through various in-class activities and experiences. Classrooms are transformed while exploring the theme with the children’s artwork as well as educator created decorations allowing both children and staff to explore the theme. Monthly lesson plans directly related to the theme are posted outside of the classroom. The teachable moments “Beyond the Theme” and/or Mid-month “More to Explore” posters are posted on the classroom board. They describe what the children enjoyed and what they plan to be working on. Theme related outings and follow-up activities help children bring real life experiences to their learning.

We encourage parent participation and invite parents to come and discuss their professions and/or their cultures with the children especially if it fits the theme of the month or the special day. Parents are always welcome to come and celebrate numerous holidays and events. As a start to conversations between parents and children, our question of the week encourages open ended discussion to uncover what their children have been learning.

Several of our daycares have edible gardens that the children tend to themselves. This experience is closely related to multiple themes throughout the year.  Not only do the children discover the world around them with these gardens, but they are also learning about sustainable living. The children help plant the seeds in the spring, they help to water the garden and get to watch the plants grow. Once ready, they help harvest the vegetables and give them to our in-house cook. The cook then will prepare a delicious meal using the produce the children have grown themselves.
